Since 1996

Pool decking turns a tiled or concrete pool surround into a usable outdoor floor. The right material stays cool underfoot in July sun, holds its grip when wet, and ties the pool edge into the rest of the patio or terrace without the heat-loaded harshness of bare paving. We install timber, composite and porcelain pool decking across the Costa del Sol from Nerja to Gibraltar, with sealing and treatment as standard on timber builds and a three-year EnviroCare warranty on parts and labour. EnviroCare has been working on coastal villas out of Mijas since 1996.

Timber, composite or porcelain

Three decking types cover almost every install. The decision comes down to surface temperature in direct sun, slip resistance when wet, the look the owner wants and how much maintenance the household is willing to take on.

  • Tropical hardwood timber (ipe, iroko): warm look, needs re-oiling every two to three years
  • Composite decking (recycled wood-and-plastic): mid-grey to teak colours, no re-staining
  • Porcelain stone-effect decking: 20 mm slabs on pedestals, low maintenance, runs cool
  • Treated softwood: lower-cost option, six to ten year life on coastal exposure

Surface temperature and slip resistance

Bare feet are the test on a Costa del Sol pool deck. Tropical hardwood timber sits around 30 to 35 degrees in full July sun and stays comfortable. Composite decking with a textured surface runs slightly warmer at 35 to 40 degrees. Porcelain stone-effect runs cool, typically 30 to 38 degrees on a light shade. Darker porcelain shades and lower-quality composites can hit 45 to 55 degrees, which is too hot for barefoot use in midsummer. Slip resistance is the second factor: every product we fit has an R11 or better anti-slip rating, which is the industry standard for the wet zone around a pool.

Substrate and fixings

Pool decking sits on one of two substrates. Timber and composite boards screw down to a treated joist sub-frame, which lifts the deck above the existing concrete slab and gives a ventilated cavity that dries out between rains. Porcelain slabs sit on adjustable pedestals that level the deck independent of the slab below, which is the cleanest answer where the original slab is uneven or pitched. Both methods leave the existing slab intact for future access. We treat timber sub-frames with a marine-grade preservative and fit stainless screws to handle the coastal salt-air and pool-chemistry exposure.

Sealing, treatment and aftercare

Tropical hardwood decking gets factory-sealed at installation and may need re-oiling every two to three years on south-facing exposures, slightly less often on shaded runs. Composite decking is washed once or twice a year with mild soap and water and has no re-staining requirement. Porcelain decking follows the same cleaning routine as the existing pool tile. A future re-oil visit can be booked separately when the timber needs it.

Survey, quote and installation

From first call to working system

  1. Step 1

    Site visit

We visit the property to measure the area, check the existing slab condition, walk the orientation with the owner and discuss the material options. Site visits are free across the Costa del Sol.

  2. Step 2

    Material selection and quote

We send a written quote covering the material (timber, composite or porcelain), the sub-frame or pedestal system, the slip-resistance grade and the labour figure. Material samples are available on request.

  3. Step 3

    Sub-frame or pedestal install

Most decks run a one to three day sub-frame or pedestal install, with the existing slab left intact below. Adjustable pedestals level porcelain runs without lifting the slab.

  4. Step 4

    Board or slab install

Decking boards screw down to the sub-frame on stainless fixings. Porcelain slabs sit on the pedestal heads and lock together with the manufacturer's clip system. Total deck install runs three to seven days on a typical residential pool surround.

  5. Step 5

    Three-year warranty

Every deck install carries a three-year EnviroCare warranty on parts and labour, on top of the manufacturer warranty on the boards or slabs.

Why EnviroCare

Why local experience matters

Trading since 1996

Close to thirty years on the Costa del Sol working on coastal villa patios, pool surrounds and outdoor spaces.

Material picked for the site

Surface temperature in direct sun, slip resistance when wet, and re-staining tolerance are different for every household. We match the material to the property and the owner, not blanket-spec one product across every job.

Coastal-grade fixings

Stainless screws on timber and composite. Marine-grade preservatives on the sub-frame. Powder-coated aluminium edge trim on porcelain. The coastal salt-air and pool chemistry are designed in from day one.

Three-year warranty

Every deck install carries a three-year EnviroCare warranty on parts and labour.

Questions customers ask

Frequently asked questions

Does timber decking get too hot for bare feet?

Tropical hardwood timber sits around 30 to 35 degrees in full July sun and stays comfortable for barefoot use. Treated softwood and darker composite decking can run warmer. We pick the material to suit the orientation and the household's tolerance for surface temperature.

Composite or porcelain?

Composite decking has the look and feel of timber with none of the re-staining. Porcelain stone-effect decking runs cooler underfoot, lasts longer and sits on adjustable pedestals that level the deck without lifting the existing slab. Most coastal villas we work on lean toward porcelain on south-facing exposures and composite on shaded sides.

Do I need to remove the existing tile or concrete first?

No. Timber and composite boards screw down to a treated joist sub-frame above the existing slab. Porcelain slabs sit on adjustable pedestals that level above the slab. Both methods leave the existing slab intact, which is the cleanest answer for future access and avoids the demolition cost.

How long does a pool decking install take?

Three to seven days on a typical residential pool surround, including the sub-frame or pedestal install. Larger decks with curved edges or step detail run seven to ten days. We confirm timing on the design quote.

What about re-oiling and aftercare?

Tropical hardwood decking gets factory-sealed at install and needs re-oiling every two to three years on south-facing exposures. Composite decking is washed once or twice a year with mild soap and water. Porcelain decking is washed with the same routine as the existing pool tile.

Will the new decking match the rest of the patio?

We pick the colour, the grain and the laying pattern at design stage so the deck ties into the existing patio rather than fighting it. Where the existing patio is a contrast colour to the chosen deck, we run a defined edge or a transition strip between the two materials.
