A pergola is the structural answer to the shade problem on a Costa del Sol patio. Where a retractable awning suits a kitchen door and a sail shade suits a small terrace, a pergola covers a larger lounging or dining area with a permanent roof, an option to add motorised louvres for adjustable shade, and a structure that can carry integrated lighting, side blinds and overhead fans. We design and build pergolas across the coast from Nerja to Gibraltar, in timber for properties where the look of natural wood matters and in aluminium for properties where low-maintenance and louvred-roof flexibility are the priority. Timber, aluminium or hybrid

Timber pergolas give warmth and a settled, traditional look that fits Andalusian architecture. They need re-staining every three to five years on south-facing exposures and the structure responds to coastal humidity if untreated. Aluminium pergolas are powder-coated, hold their colour for fifteen-plus years, and support the louvred-roof systems that open and close on a motorised rotation. Hybrid builds use timber for the upright posts and aluminium for the roof structure, which gives the warmth of timber in the eye-line and the durability of aluminium overhead.

Fixed roof, louvred roof or retractable fabric

Three roof systems cover almost every install. A fixed solid roof gives certainty and rain protection, suits dining areas that get used through showers, and works well with overhead fans. A louvred aluminium roof (the bioclimatic system) rotates the blades from fully open to fully closed on a motorised control, which lets the household pick the shade level by the hour. Retractable fabric roofs cassette into a bar at one end and pull across when called, which suits owners who want fully open sky most of the time and shade on demand. We size the roof to the area below and the orientation of the property.

Integrated lighting, fans and side blinds

Most pergola builds we do include some combination of integrated lighting (warm-light strips set into the rafters or the louvre frame), overhead fans (running off the same supply as the lighting for summer evenings), and retractable side blinds (which drop down on motorised rollers to close in the side of the pergola against low afternoon sun or a coastal breeze). The wiring runs into the structure on first-fix, so the lighting and the motor controls look clean rather than retrofitted.

Anchoring and ground conditions

A pergola has to handle the autumn storm gusts on the coast, which can hit 80 to 100 km/h on exposed sites. The structure anchors into concrete pads or into the existing patio slab with chemical anchors, with the upright posts sized to the area of the roof and the wind exposure. Cantilevered (single-side-anchored) pergolas suit terraces where the structure has to extend over a pool edge or a planted bed. We design the anchoring on the site survey based on the ground conditions and the exposure.

Site visit

We visit the property to measure the area, walk the orientation with the owner, identify the anchoring points and discuss the roof system. Site visits are free across the Costa del Sol.
Step 2

Design and quote

We send a design with a layout sketch, the roof system, the integrated lighting and motor specification, and a written quote. No deposit until you accept it.
Step 3

Manufacture and delivery

Most aluminium pergolas run a three to five week manufacture lead time depending on the colour and the louvre system. Timber and hybrid builds run faster because most components are sourced locally.
Step 4

Build and commissioning

On-site build runs three to seven days depending on the scope. We commission the motors, the lighting and any side blinds at handover. Three-year EnviroCare warranty on parts and labour starts that day.
